Day 4

00:09 EDT June 18, 2008

Today was another busy day, continuing with the projects we started on Monday.  We worked a little longer, and even had our evening's schedules pushed back.  In light of this, we would like to share what we found at dinner, while we were reading the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church newsletter - the Carillon, none the less - about our visit.  They've certainly kept to their promises of hospitality with us, and we are very much enjoying the cookies various hosts are bringing by each night!

Please follow the link(s), and enjoy our host church's view of our time here in Detroit.

If you ever find yourself in the Detroit area, we strongly encourage a visit to this magnificent congregation.

Thanks for following our journey

Day 3

23:41 EDT

Today was our first day of work. We departed from the church to two different mission sites. One team was headed to do VBS work with the community children and another group was headed to do work at a local Detroit Church.

Our VBS crew headed off to the Second Mile Center to meet with the kids for arts and crafts, games, and Bible stories. The kids really enjoyed interacting with our leaders as well as learning and playing with their friends. After a long day at the Second Mile Center with the wonderful enthusiastic kids, we ventured to a warehouse for a creative recycling art complex called Arts and Scraps. We worked hard in their warehouse, conveniently located down the street from their retail store. The VBS group organized the warehouse for hours and made a difference to their establishment. We are looking forward to tomorrow and the rest of the week with the children we met today.

Meanwhile, the work crew headed into the urban environment of Detroit to help repair the Park United Presbyterian Church. We primarily worked in a large room where they serve food to the homeless, but also worked in an adjacent room in the basement. Both rooms suffered severe water damage that ruined floors, paint, and tiles. We had three main jobs which included demolition of the damaged sub floor, new tile, and painting. It was a long day of hard, dedicated work that in the end was very fulfilling for everyone on the crew. We are looking forward to finishing the larger room tomorrow in time for their evening soup kitchen.

The two crews joined each other back at the church where we converged for dinner, with our devotion time afterward. The devotions were especially meaningful because we separated back into our groups to discuss the highlights of our team efforts and areas for improvement, which will allow us to successfully complete all of the tasks for which we were commissioned.

After a fun day of VBS games, Bible stories, prayers, and snacks, the kids had a chance to fly their Japanese fish kite crafts with Marla F leading a parade around the parking lot.
