Habitat for Humanity

Habitat LogoJoyful Hands house builders  Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide. Habitat invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work in partnership, building houses with people in need and making affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action.

With volunteer labor and tax deductible donations of both money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) family. Habitat houses are sold to the partner families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Habitat has built over 70,000 houses around the world, providing 350,000 people with safe, decent and affordable shelter.

Selection committees from Habitat affiliates (in Barrington’s case, Habitat for Humanity of the Northern Fox Valley) carefully consider applicants’ levels of need, willingness to become partners in the Habitat program, and ability to repay the no-interest loans. Every affiliate follows a nondiscriminatory policy in family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing homeowner families.

Local Barrington Churches have formed a partnership which is affiliated with Northern Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity.
