Funerals

The resurrection is a central doctrine of the Christian faith and shapes Christians’ attitudes and responses to the event of death. Death brings loss, sorrow, and grief to all. In the face of death Christians affirm with tears and joy the hope of the gospel. Christians do not bear bereavement in isolation but are sustained by the power of the Spirit and the community of faith. The church offers a ministry of love and hope to all who grieve.

Arranging a Funeral or Memorial Service
The pastors of The Presbyterian Church of Barrington are available to minister to families at the time of death and to conduct funeral services (at which the body of the deceased is present) or memorial services. Such services are ordinarily held in the church Sanctuary, although arrangements may be made to hold the service at another suitable place such as a home, a funeral home, at graveside, or where ashes will be interred or scattered such as our Memorial Garden.

The funeral or memorial service is a service of Christian worship and is under the direction of the pastor conducting the service. Others may be invited to participate as leaders in the service at the discretion of the pastor. The pastor will provide guidance to the family on the content of the service and is prepared to recommend appropriate scripture readings and hymns. The music staff of the church is available to recommend appropriate sacred music.

In order that attention in the service be directed to God, when a casket is present it is closed prior to the start of the service. Any fraternal, civic or military rites are to be conducted separately.

The Committal
Members and friends of the family of the one who has died may gather at the graveside, or the place where ashes will be interred or scattered, for a service of farewell. This is a brief, dignified service which reflects the reality of death, entrusts the one who has died to the care of God, and bears witness to faith in the resurrection from the dead. The committal may take place before or after the funeral or memorial service.
