Accountant - Part Time

A part time Accountant is needed at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington. 16 – 18 hours per week. Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday preferred, but negotiable.

We are seeking a friendly person with excellent supervisory and organizational skills. In addition, familiarity with MS Office software (especially Excel), a bachelor’s degree in accounting and 5+ years of accounting experience is required. This position reports to the Head of Staff and supervises the accounting assistant. Strong oral and written communication skills are needed for interaction with board and church members, as is the ability to remain sensitive to many matters of a confidential nature.

Specific Duties for Accountant

  • Supervision of all accounting assistant’s data entry duties, both cash receipts and disbursements, with review and reconciliation of those sub-systems as needed.
  • Implementation and documentation of existing financial controls and policies with improvements as needed
  • Financial system management as a whole.  Prior experience or understanding of an accrual basis integrated software package with subsidiary ledgers is required. Additional experience in fund or non-profit accounting is also helpful.
  • Bank reconciliations, all month-end journal entries and reconciliations
  • Cash management and banking relationships
  • Monthly processing of credit card contributions via on online giving system
  • Stock transactions
  • Payroll, through use of payroll service, and all related recordkeeping
  • Benefits issues liaison: complete annual paperwork for Board of Pensions, understand benefit and retirement plans as well as personnel policies, to become resource for employees.
  • Monthly financial statement production and analysis, including narrative footnotes
  • Coordinate with Budget committee; a joint effort with the Session Stewardship Committee, Trustee Treasurer and Trustee representative
  • Main contact for Trustees, committees and fundraising groups for any accounting information or procedural assistance
  • Attend Trustee, Budget committee or other committee meetings as requested

Facility Services, Sexton

A 3/4 time Facility Services, Sexton is needed at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington. 32-34 hours per week. Monday – Thursday 8:30 – 4:00 and Sundays 8:00 – 12:00.

We are seeking a friendly person with excellent cleaning and maintenance skills. Basic computer skills a plus, email etc. This position reports to the head of staff, and works with all staff, Board of Trustees and congregational volunteers.

Duties include:

  • Follow daily task list of established cleaning standards.
  • Maintain & purchase inventory for church building and cleaning equipment.
  • Work with vacuums, dusters, mops and other cleaning equipment.
  • Maintenance & inspection of building and grounds.
  • Set up and takedown of meeting rooms.
  • Provide support for liturgical events.
  • Co-ordinate with snow plowing, florist, landscaper, and other vendor.
  • Work with hand tools and basic test equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and repair or secure vendor support.
  • General knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment.
  • Communicate with Staff and Trustees, both written and verbal.
  • Provide positive congregational service support
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Part Time Accounting Assistant/Bookkeeper

A part time bookkeeper/accounting assistant is needed at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington. 12-15 hours per week. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays preferred.

We are seeking a friendly person with excellent organizational and data entry skills. In addition, familiarity with MS Office software (especially Excel) and prior bookkeeping experience preferred. This position reports to and works hand in hand with the accountant on staff. The ability to communicate well and remain sensitive to matters of a confidential nature is also important when dealing with donations to the church.

Primary duties include:

  • Managing the organization of all inbound and outbound mail and other paperwork that flows through the accounting department. This includes maintaining a filing system that is easy to access for staff members.
  • Verification and data entry into our computer system of all deposits of church collections prepared by volunteers. Monthly review to ensure accuracy. Reconciliation of bank statements.
  • Communication with church members on their giving throughout the year: answer questions via phone and e-mail; handle acknowledgements of memorial donations.
  • Manage system production of “giving statements’ to all congregants three times per year.
  • Manage data entry and tracking for the annual stewardship campaign and other fundraising drives, with weekly communication to stewardship committee.
  • Payment of all routine invoices: ensuring back-up documentation and authorization to pay is adequate, and follow up with vendors to correct billing discrepancies when needed. A basic understanding of the church’s budget to correctly classify payments is needed.
