Deacons
Are Looking for Hosts

to Offer the Most!
Our friendly Sunday morning traditions of being offered a warm
handshake when you enter the church as well as a hot cup of coffee
served up after worship come to you courtesy of our Deacons. What
you might not know is the amount of time each month the Deacons
dedicate to recruiting volunteers.
ly six to ten hours are
spent each month to maintain these cherished traditions. In an
effort to convert this time on the telephone into more meaningful
pastoral care time; we are trying to implement a new way of securing
hospitality volunteers to greet and serve coffee.
The Deacons are hopeful that we can create approximately eight Hospitality Teams to serve and greet on a rotation schedule. The concept mirrors our successful Usher Teams. Along with these predetermined teams, our various committees will continue to serve coffee and greet periodically throughout the year thereby supplementing the teams.
Briefly each team will be composed of six hosts including a Lead
Host to coordinate tasks.
The tasks for each team on any given Sunday would include:
1. Picking up donut holes
2. Setting up coffee service at tables and brewing the coffee
3. Serving coffee at 10:00 AM
4. Greeting at 9:00 AM service
5. Cleaning up after 9:00 AM and set up self-service for 11:00 AM
service
6. Greet at 11:00 AM service (excluding June – August during summer
hours!)
There is no clean up required after 11:00 AM as our cleaning staff
does this each Monday!
The two Deacon Hospitality Coordinators will create the quarterly schedules, instruction booklets and provide team rosters with contact information to all hospitality team participants. They will also keep track of supplies. Should you find yourself with a scheduling conflict there will be a pool of 40 - 48 other hosts to contact in order to switch dates. You would have at least 30 days prior to any schedule taking effect to secure a replacement. This makes it almost flawless and easy for the team host members!
We are looking for willing members to serve our faith community alongside your Deacons. It is also a great way to speak with friends and meet new ones! Sign-up tables will be available in Fellowship Hall through late April. Then we will all meet for training with a Q & A session before launching the team schedule this summer 2006.
Please consider participating in this new ministry to others! If you have any questions please contact the church office and leave a message for Nancy Bohren, Deacon Moderator at (847) 381-0975

Men’s
Retreat - April 21-23, 2006

Making Space for Spirit
For the first time, a retreat sponsored by and for the men of our church will be offered in April.
View it as an opportunity to step back from our complex, multi-tasking, goal-oriented, material-focused, and information-overloaded world.
View it as an opportunity to find some quality time to reflect, to learn and to share.
View it as an opportunity to participate in a retreat led and facilitated by Dr. Ron Miller. Ron is the chair of the Religion Department at Lake Forest College, the co-founder of Common Ground and the author of numerous books and articles. He has spoken many times at our church during Adult Education sessions.
Ron, along with our own congregational panels, will explore from a individual and group perspective the theme Making Space for Spirit through four key areas:
Sounds of Silence
Separate Paths – Same Spirit
Support and Sharing
Stepping Into Tomorrow
To focus on spirituality in a quiet, reflective and educational manner, we are gathering at George Williams Campus, Williams Bay, Wisconsin – a perfect environment for this enriching experience. The retreat begins Friday evening at 8:00 PM and concludes at noon on Sunday. The cost for the retreat, including accommodations, meals, and Ron Miller’s participation is $160 per attendee.
To participate, sign up after Sunday services in March, or contact the church office or see Denny McGurer, Tom Long or Chip Kyle. Deadline for signing up is Sunday, March 27th.
Holy
Week April 9th - 16th, 2006

April 9, Palm/Passion Sunday, 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The service maintains a tension between the triumphal entry and the somberness of the passion (Jesus’ arrest, trial and crucifixion). The children will process with palms to remind us of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Later in the service we will read Mark’s account of Jesus’ passion. The passion reading will be arranged for several participants, including the congregation as the crowd that demands Jesus’ crucifixion.
April 12, White Breakfast, 9:30 a.m. The service consists of music and meditation in the Sanctuary and will include Holy Communion. A homily by Dr. Baxter will reflect on “The Cup of Compassion.” Brunch will follow in Fellowship Hall.
April 13, Maundy Thursday. 7:30 p.m. In remembrance of the Last Supper, our first graders will participate in Communion for the first time. Mr. Spike will be preaching a sermon entitled “Not Only My Feet.”
April 14, Good Friday, Noon - 3:00 p.m. The Sanctuary will
be open for contemplative prayer. Please come in and check out
our new meditative prayer booklet!
April 14, Good Friday, 7:30 p.m. Tenebrae Service. This
ancient service of darkness is used to impress upon the minds and
hearts of believers the consequences of humankind’s sin and the
greatness of the Savior’s sacrifice on Calvary.

Lent
Taizé Services and Classes

See schedule below
During Lent we will hold Taizé Services and two separate and different classes.
The Taizé Worship Service
Wednesdays, March 8 & 22, April 5 at 7:00 p.m.
Taizé Services take the form of meditative common prayer.
Gathered in the presence of Christ, we sing uncomplicated repetitive
songs, uncluttered by too many words, allowing the mystery of God to
become tangible through the beauty of simplicity.
“Confronting
the Controversies: Biblical Perspectives on Tough Issues”
Wednesdays, March 8, 15 & 22, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Parlor
Dr. Curt Baxter will lead a study on Adam Hamilton’s book,
Confronting the Controversies. The purpose of the study is
to help us to deal with controversial issues in light of the Bible
and Christian beliefs. Controversial issues are complex and
multifaceted and, therefore, will result in multifaceted
perspectives. Caring, compassionate and thoughtful people of faith
can hold opposite positions on these issues. These sessions are not
intended to be a debate but an opportunity to grow in faith
together, learn more about the Bible and develop our own informed
perspectives. Some of these issues will be impossible to resolve
completely this side of eternity.
“The
Gospel According to The Simpsons, Part Deux”
Wednesdays, March 8, 15 & 22, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the 7th & 8th

Join an intergenerational group as we continue our exploration of “The Simpsons”. Facilitated by Rev. Dan Spike and Melissa Armstrong-Hansche, classes will be led by youth of our church. Basing the lesson on one of their favorite episodes, the youth will explore the scriptural references demonstrated by Homer and his family and the other residents of Springfield. View this Pop Culture icon through the eyes of faith. No reading required – just come, kick back and enjoy Bible study in a whole new way. All ages are welcome!
